And it is no by chance that it is called "the city of Splendor" ...
ANTWERP is the capital of the world of the XVI century, the birthplace of Flemish painting. Brilliant Rubens and Van Dyck lived and created there. The second largest and most important city of Belgium, as well as its largest port, is the main city of the province of ANTWERPEN, which stretches along the banks of the deep river Scheldt (in German, Scheldt). The city knew both ups and downs, which tempered the character of its inhabitants, making it no less durable than diamonds. By the way, Antwerp ranks first in the world in the number of processed and sold diamonds. And in the XVI century in Europe there was a saying: "The world is a ring, and Antwerp is a diamond on it."
Joining the Hanseatic League in 1315, Antwerp turned into the second largest city after Paris in Europe north of the Alps by the 16th century. Trade gave a unique sense of freedom and led to the development of the arts, crafts, culture, print and finance. The exchange, transferred here "to the advantage of merchants of all nations and languages" from Bruges, has made Antwerp the financial center of the world. This is the hometown of a whole galaxy of brilliant artists: Rubens, Van Dyck, Brueghel, Jordaens and others whose works adorn the magnificent churches and museums of the city.
Modern Antwerp is one of the recognized centers of world fashion. Antwerp is cosmopolitan - it is a colorful mixture of nations, cultures, architectural styles with a unique atmosphere and aura that promotes the birth of talents. It is a paradise for tourists from all over the world.
During the tour, we will approach the symbol of the city, to its oldest building - the castle of Steen. Today it houses the Museum of Shipping. On the other side of the street rises a magnificent Gothic building - this is the House of Butchers. Today it also has a museum, in the halls of which there is a collection of art objects.
You will not be indifferent to the grandeur of the Grote Markt. On this square are located the Town Hall of the 16th century and the Gothic facades of the buildings of shops and guilds. In the center of the square, your attention will be attracted to the unusual Brabo fountain, the occasion for the construction of which was a legend that the guide will certainly tell you.
The Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, opened in 1521, has the highest bell tower in Belgium and is decorated with works by Rubens and other famous Flemish painters. The central shopping street Meir is decorated with the first skyscraper in Europe about 100 meters high, the exchange building, the Royal Palace, the Festivity Hall, numerous shop windows and monuments to artists.
A little to the side we will see one of the main attractions of Antwerp - the house-museum of the Flemish genius Peter Paul Rubens (XVII century). At the end of the street you can see the magnificent dome of the most beautiful railway station in Belgium, next to which there are the Diamond Museum, Diamond Exchanges, the Jewish Quarter with numerous jewelry shops and one of the oldest zoos in the world with an area of 10 hectares.
In your free time, you will pay tribute to the excellent Flemish cuisine, and Flemish beer (300 varieties), excellent Belgian chocolate, and, of course, the inevitable shopping.
