The Vienna congress of 1814 – 1815 years proclaimed the independent Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as a part of the German Union. In 1866 the duchy became the independent state. During the First and the Second world wars the country was occupied by the German forces.
The main sights of Luxembourg are the National Museum, Notre Dame Gothic Cathedral (17th century), the Palace of the Grand Duke (16th century), City Council (19th century). Also, it will be interesting for everybody to get acquainted with Esch-sur-Alzette (the castle of the 19th century).
Trier is one of the oldest cities of Germany. Based in 14 – 16 B.C., the city was the capital of the Roman province of Belgica Prima for a long time, from this place Romans operated a part of modern Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg.
The name of the city – Trier - simplified Roman "Augustus Treverorum". One more kingpin in the history of Trier is Charles the Great, who made Trier the capital of big episcopacy and, thus, the rich city.
Today Trier is the small town on the border with Luxembourg, which image defines a surprising combination of the Roman constructions of the Middle Ages and baroque in city architecture. For tourists, it is the most beautiful observation deck of Europe.
